I’m a mechanic – don’t ignore these dash warnings including my ‘oh s***’ light

A CAR mechanic has taken to the internet to help explain the most important lights on drivers’ dashboards.

The mechanic jokingly refers to one as the ‘oh s***’ light that could mean one of multiple things and cost you £1,000s to repair.

On his TikTok channel, the owner of mechanic service KritKarr in the US goes by the name of @kingregis_ and offers drivers hints and tips.

One of his videos titled ‘What your car warning lights mean in 30 secs,’ explains three important dash lights.

The first is the red oil warning light which the mechanic explains: “either means you’re running low on oil, or you possibly have an oil leak.”

It’s important to stop driving as soon as possible if you see this, as carrying on could mean a seized engine and a very expensive rebuild is needed.

The next one is the orange windscreen fluid light. People are often confused about it, but it’s important to sort, especially in winter when road grime can flick up onto your screen and reduce visibility.

@kingregis_ explains that the light tells you: “you’re running low on washer fluid, so fill it up.”

He goes on: “The last one is the ‘oh s***’ light, or the check engine light.

“It could be as simple as a loose gas cap, or you could need a whole new engine.”

The orange check engine light needs attention straight away, as it could mean one of many different things.

Not having your fuel filler cap correctly tightened can mess with a car’s engine sensors, so it could be a simple, free fix.

But it could also be a faulty oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, mass airflow sensor, diesel particulate sensor, spark plugs, vacuum hose, fuel injector or fuel pump.

Clearly, there can’t be lights for all of these issues, so the engine warning light covers them all off.

Whatever the problem is, a new engine costs £1,000s and it’s worth getting the light diagnosed with a mechanic as soon as possible.
