If you’ve ever made a phone call with bad cell reception, it can be infuriating.

But the iPhone has the ability to make phone calls over WiFi too.

The feature is tucked away in your iPhone settings, and simply needs to be toggled on.

“When your iPhone has a low cellular signal, use WiFi Calling to make and receive calls through a WiFi network,” Apple explained.

“When Wi-Fi Calling is available, “Wi-Fi” is displayed after your carrier name in the status bar, and all your calls go through Wi-Fi.”

To set it up, go into the Settings app and then look for Cellular or Mobile Data.

You might see two SIM options if you have a Dual SIM smartphone.

Once you’ve picked a SIM, go into WiFi Calling and then turn it on.

You may also need to enter or confirm your address for emergency services.

That’s because emergency service calls work in a special way.

“Emergency calls on your iPhone are routed through cellular service when available,” Apple said.

“In the event that cellular service isn’t available, and you have enabled Wi-Fi Calling, emergency calls may be made over Wi-Fi, and your device’s location information may be used for emergency calls to aid response efforts, regardless of whether you enable Location Services.

“Some carriers may use the address you registered with the carrier when signing up for Wi-Fi Calling as your location.

“When connected to Wi-Fi calling, your iPhone may not receive emergency alerts.”

The good news is that WiFi Calling can make general phone calls much more stable.

And if you lose a WiFi connection during a call, it will automatically switch to the cellular network.

But that’s only if one is available and you have cellular data turned on.
