I’m a fashion expert, the five ‘cool’ trends which are actually cheap and frumpy
REMEMBER when popper trousers were in, or when vests over T-shirts were the must have cool look?
Thankfully, they fell out of style rapidly and we hope never to see them again.
Well, unfortunately the same can be said for recent trends that have had their day in more ways than one.
Be it a trend shift on the catwalk or something that has just been worn to death that now they’re making you look out of date and out of style, some looks need to be put to the back of the wardrobe for good.
Here, Fabulous’ Fashion Editor Clemmie Fieldsend reveals what trends you need to let go of that are knocking off style points.
MOM JEANS
Hip hugging, tummy enhancing high waisted Mom jeans have fallen out of fashion favour due to them not being universally flattering for everyone.
Straighter jean shapes will always be in style and are loved by model Kaia Gerber and George Clooney’s wife, Amal Clooney.
They start from your hips and continue in a straight line all the way down creating a longer looking leg like Zara’s ‘Marine’ jean that has been one of the most popular styles sold by the brand this year.
LEGGINGS AND SWEATSHIRTS
Leggings have long been a comfortable go to, and even more so in the pandemic.
During Covid we were hit with stylish loungewear including leggings and sweats, but the pandemic is over and it’s time to wear something new.
The basic, in every sense of the word, look that can be seen on immaculate influencers that are a variation on Molly-Mae Hauge (although looks as though even she has put the look to bed), isn’t a catwalk or stylish trend but a cultural trend and that has finished.
Loungewear is for lounging, not for a trip to the shops or a day at work.
CROSS BODY BUM BAGS
Circa 2017 catwalk designers like Supreme and Louis Vuitton created a new way of wearing bags.
Simple, but very effective, the once naff bum-bag was worn across the body sparking A-listers like Hailey Bieber and Kim Kardashain, plus us mere mortals alike to do the same.
Six years on the look has had its day.
Sleek, nineties style shoulder bags are now the latest go to so it’s time to put your bum-bag away or just wear it around your waist.
FLORAL MIDI DRESSES
From Holly Willoughby to Kate Middleton floral midi dresses have been the throw-on-and-go look for many.
Whether it’s a baby shower, wedding or any other occasion that warrants dressing up, no doubt there will be five or more women there in a floral midi dress.
And inevitably worn with a hairband with a knot in the middle.
John Lewis, the once go-tos for all things floral and prim, have said they will scrap the look as shoppers have “got to move on”.
Even the Princess of Wales has grown tired of the look and now favours perennial print, polka dot, for occasionwear.
