I’m a driving instructor – why you can undertake cars without breaking rules
A DRIVING instructor has revealed how you can undertake cars without breaking the rules – but there’s a catch.
A pair of experts from The Complete Theory Test Kit posted a clip to TikTok discussing the controversial manoeuvre.
In the clip, the instructors are running a Q&A for learner drivers, in which they said that undertaking is actually allowed – but only in specific circumstances.
They explained: “If there is slow-moving traffic or someone is going extra slow and the left-hand lane’s clear it’s absolutely fine.”
The Highway Code does not specifically forbid undertaking, but it is strongly discouraged.
Despite this, as explained by the TikTokers, there are exceptions when the move is considered safe.
Rule 268 of the Highway Code reads: “In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right.
“In these conditions, you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right.
“Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.”
Other exceptions exist in average speed check zones and when a vehicle ahead is turning right or making a U-turn.
However, the instructors urged drivers to be safe and check their blind spots thoroughly before undertaking just in case there is traffic on the inside.
One social media user commented agreeing with the advice, saying that they “do it all the time”.
It comes after The Sun Online looked explained when emergency vehicles are allowed in bus lanes – and when they aren’t.
Meanwhile, viewers were left divided after a video emerged of a driver cutting in front of other cars at a roundabout, with people unsure who was at fault.
