Iconic Melbourne oval gets $3 million overhaul
The Victorian Government has today announced the $3 million dollar upgrade of iconic AFL oval Gosch’s Paddock, the current home of the Melbourne Demons’ AFL and AFLW squads.
The upgrade will see the oval enlarged to the length of the MCG and the width of the Marvel Stadium ground, which will allow the Demons to appropriately replicate match-day situations during training with the oval gaining a near 20 per cent upgrade in size.
Work on the Gosch’s Paddock upgrade will start later this month, with its completion scheduled to be finished before the start of the 2022 AFL season.
“We are collectively putting in $3 million dollars to upgrade Gosch’s Paddock to AFL dimensions,” said Victorian Sports Minister Martin Pakula.
“For a long time, the Melbourne football club has trained on an oval which is about 20 per cent below AFL dimensions. It’s meant they have to make all sorts of other arrangements.
“That funding support is coming from the Melbourne Olympic Park’s trust at $2 million dollars, and half a million each from the AFL and Melbourne themselves.”
Melbourne Demons CEO Gary Pert said the changes to the oval will prove crucial to the way the club prepares for game-day.
“As we look to establish our new long-term training base, the number one priority in speaking to coaches and players was access to a training oval that reflects the dimensions of the MCG as closely as possible,” said Pert.
“Gosch’s paddock is the main training base for both our AFL and AFLW programs and to have the upgrade complete will significantly increase our ability to train at the highest possible standard.
“With both our AFL and AFLW programs playing their home games on larger ovals – the MCG and Casey Fields – this upgrade will be critical to allow our coaches to run drills that replicate match-day conditions.
“On behalf of the Melbourne Football Club I would like to thank the Victorian State Government, Department of Sport and Recreation, Melbourne and Olympics Park Trust and the AFL who have all helped in this complex planning process and assisted with funding to ensure the project’s commencement.”
