ICC World Cup 2023 schedule released: Final to be played at Ahmedabad on Nov 19
ICC has announced the schedule for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be staged in India for the first time. ICC CEO Geoff Allardyce and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced the list of venues, dates and fixtures.
As expected, the first match of the 2023 World Cup will be between reigning champions England and 2019 runners-up New Zealand on 5 October in Ahmedabad. India will play their first match against five-time World Cup winners Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on 8 October.
Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi Stadium will host the final of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on 19 November. The much-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan will also be played at the same venue on October 15.
According to PTI, Pakistan had earlier requested BCCI and ICC to shift the venue of the marquee clash to Chennai, Bengaluru or Kolkata. However, this demand was rejected by both the cricketing bodies.
In addition, the first semi-final will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15. Wankhede Stadium was also home to the final encounter between Sri Lanka during ODI World Cup 2011. The second semi-final will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 16.
The 2023 ODI World Cup will be played at a total of 10 venues including Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata. Moreover, warm-up matches will be played in Guwahati, Thiruvananthapuram and Hyderabad from 29 September to 3 October.
Reportedly, twelve hosting associations met in Mumbai on Monday to discuss the details and finalise the venues before official announcement today.
A total of 10 teams will participate in the ODI cricket world cup 2023 while India along with 7 other teams has already qualified for the World Cup through the Super League. The last two spots will be decided through the Qualifier tournament which will end on July 9.
