I was charged £1,200 for chewy calamari at Mykonos bar… they even added £150 tip
A HORRIFIED customer has revealed he was charged more than £1,200 for a disappointing meal including “chewy” calamari and “inedible” pasta at a notorious Mykonos beach restaurant.
Dad-of-two David was visiting the Greek holiday island with his family when he says he was burned by the now infamous high prices at DK Oyster Bar.
The 50-year-old was visiting from Australia when they paid a trip to the restaurant in the Mykonos resort of Platys Gialos.
Although he was expecting high prices, he was still left gobsmacked when the bill arrived.
And when he checked his bank statement, he was furious to discover that the cheeky waiting staff had also added on a £150 tip.
“We were stung, they should put up warning signs,” he told The Sun Online.
“It’s a trap for tourists… It’s more expensive than the Ritz in Paris, but the food is inedible.”
He was visiting Mykonos with his wife Sohani for her 50th birthday and their two kids aged 13 and 19.
French-born David, who runs a restaurant business himself, ordered a bottle of wine and two virgin Pina Coladas before he says the waiter pressured them into ordering some seafood dishes.
“We realised it was expensive but we were on holiday and were loving it, there was cool music and we thought we would stay,” he said.
“The waiter was still very pleasant and suggested we order a few dishes.”
But when their food arrived, David and his family were bitterly disappointed with the huge platter of chewy calamari they were given.
An equally enormous but undercooked and tasteless plate of octopus was also sent, along with an “inedible” plate of tomato pasta.
For dessert, they received a sad-looking fruit platter along with a £210 shisha.
And when the bill arrived, David’s disappointment turned to anger.
“The 1,205.60 euro (£1,018.34) bill was in Greek, of course, and I had no choice but to pay it,” he said. “The next day after checking my bank account I realised that [they] charged me 1,387.59 euros (£1,172.86).”
He allegedly discovered that – without asking – the waiter had slapped on a tip worth more than £150.
David said that the staff looked intimidating, and he was worried about what would happen if he didn’t pay.

The owner of DK Oyster Bar has recently been forced to defend his eye-watering prices after being accused of ripping off tourists and damaging the reputation of Mykonos.
After honeymooners Lindsay Breen and her husband Alex, both 30, claimed to have been slapped with a staggering 400 euro bill for just a beer, an Aperol spritz, and a dozen oysters, manager Dimitrios Kalamaras hit back.
Bragging that his prices are simply “beyond the budget” of some of his visitors, Dimitrios accused Lindsay and Alex of being “influencers looking to get famous” by highlighting the shocking bill.
DK Oyster Bar previously made the news in May this year after the two American tourists took the restaurant to court.
Brenda Moulton and her daughter Kaylea, 19, were horrified when they were charged nearly 600 euros (£510) for two drinks and a snack at the restaurant.
But Dimitrios was unmoved by his critics and denied claims that customers don’t know the prices before they step inside.
He accused many of his reviewers on TripAdvisor of lying, and said following “dozens” of similar “false” claims, he had installed three blackboards at the entrance to the restaurant displaying his prices.
Dimitrios also said that “no adult in their right mind” would order a drink without seeing how much it costs first and told customers to discuss the price with the manager before they order.
Justifying his higher-than-average prices, he said that DK Oyster’s “concept” was completely different to other restaurants.
“Unfortunately, all of us who work in the hospitality sector have been approached by notorious ‘influencers’ who instead of making their living by advertising products and services to their audience, they put pressure on certain businesses for exorbitant fees and free meals,” he said.
“In DK Oyster, we have advertised in the ways we consider suitable for our restaurant and we will not succumb to the influencers who have been attracted to the beautiful island of Mykonos.”
And he claimed some disgruntled customers on TripAdvisor “openly encouraging guests to come, eat and drink whatever they want and then refuse to pay the bills”.
He admitted that some “may find our prices beyond their budget,” but said they “do not appreciate the value of our services, cuisine, concept and experience”.
The number of cases of customers claiming to have been ripped off at DK Oyster Bar is growing, with hundreds of one-star TripAdvisor reviews complaining about poor food, aggressive waiters and exorbitant prices.
They include a Brit who was charged £360 for four drinks and a snack and claimed he wasn’t even shown a menu.
An American woman alleged that she was charged £460 for four drinks and a plate of oysters – and was forced to cough up by “burly” waiters.
While on TripAdvisor, a Brit claimed she was expected to pay £50 for lemonade that was so bitter it was undrinkable.
And another Brit dad was allegedly forced to pay almost £300 for a child’s meal, thanks to DK Oyster Bar’s sneaky tactic of charging by the gram for food.
The Sun Online has approached DK Oyster Bar for comment.
