I tried out the TikTok travel pillow everyone raves about – I’m not convinced

AS someone who really struggles to sleep on planes, I was pretty excited to see the Trtl travel neck pillow.

The company’s website promises “scientifically proven neck support” to “keep your head upright” while sleeping.

This all sounded brilliant – I’ve tried neck pillows before, but all left me in pain rather than well-rested.

Also, the Trtl has become incredibly popular online, with countless people on Tiktok hailing it as the ultimate solution for getting comfortable on planes.

So, on a recent nine-hour flight, I took the opportunity to put the pillow to the test and see if it lived up to the hype.

First of all, I did manage to get some sleep while using the Trtl, which for me is a real rarity.

I got the pillow out as soon as I got to my seat and before the plane had made its way to the runway, I had managed to nod off.

Initially, I had been sceptical about the pillow’s structure and design. It felt quite flimsy and I didn’t entirely trust it to keep my head upright.

But I was pleasantly surprised by the support it offered to begin with.

However, that’s not to say it was a total success.

Although I managed to doze off, staying asleep was a different matter.

I found that I woke up pretty quickly and had to adjust the pillow, or swap sides, to get comfortable again.

Achieving any long-lasting comfort was difficult, meaning I wasn’t able to get much proper rest while using the pillow.

Fortunately I had a row of seats to myself and after a couple of hours, I gave up entirely and decided to lie down and use the pillows provided by the airline instead.

The Trtl also requires the user to wrap a scarf around their neck to keep it in place, which I wasn’t a huge fan of.

Either the scarf wasn’t tight enough and the pillow slipped out of place, or it was too tight and became uncomfortable.

I actually found the most comfortable place to have the scarf was around my face, which presented its own problems when trying to sleep.

Overall, it’s a product that definitely has its positives and provides support that other neck pillows fail to offer.

It’s something I would definitely use again if I wanted a quick snooze on a shorter flight.

However, when it comes to longer journeys, I’ll just have to hope I get the row to myself again in the future.
