I paid the council £1,850 for a dropped kerb – they’ve left my drive in a mess

AN engineer who coughed up £1,850 for a dropped kerb outside his house claims the council left his driveway a mess.

Lee Townley says the contractors’ workmanship was so bad there are huge gaps between the stones – which are so uneven they “clearly didn’t use a spirit level”.

The fuming 40-year-old immediately complained to the local authority, but months later and the dodgy work remains.

Lee told StokeonTrentLive: “They are having a laugh.

“I was given a start date of March. It has been about eight or nine weeks since they started messing it all up.”

Gas engineer Lee applied to have the dropped kerb fitted shortly after moving into his Norton Heights home in Stoke-on-Trent.

He said he wanted the council to do as they have to sign the paperwork off anyway and it was around £500 for the documents alone.

“I thought I’d go through the council because they can sign it off themselves and I haven’t got to worry about dodgy builders,” he said.

“I got the quote off them, it was about £1,850. It was expensive but I thought I’d just get it done.”

But when he returned home from work, he immediately noticed several problems.

“I put my spirit level on because I knew it was wrong straight away, I could just tell,” he said.

“The gaps between the kerb stones weren’t cut straight, because it’s on a corner.

“The stones are shaped a certain degree. You cut them so they fit, because you can’t have edges round a circle.”

He phoned the council to complain but claims he was told they couldn’t find curved stones, despite him finding the exact ones online.

And workmen have been out four times to take a look since, but instead of fixing the issues they reportedly filled in the gaps with tarmac and cut the top off the original slabs.

The Sun has contacted Stoke-on-Trent City Council for comment.
