‘I lied to my dad when I was stranded in Costa Rica on longest third date’
Even if their wild third date had all the hallmarks of a romantic comedy, Khani Le feared her father wouldn’t approve of her decision to jet off to Costa Rica with Matt Robertson.
The New Yorker instead decided to lie to her dad about her company, telling him instead that she had travelled to the Central American country with a group of girlfriends.
The duo found themselves in Costa Rica when Matt, after date number 2, proposed snapping up cheap flights and spending a long weekend together soaking up the sun of nature.
Throwing caution to the wind, Khani agreed and the two set off on their adventure, only for their four-day holiday to turn into more than three months away because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Unable to get a return trip back to the US, as flights were repeatedly cancelled to stop the spread of the virus, Khani and Matt had no other alternative but to spend time with one another, with romance eventually blossoming.
As shown in the Netflix documentary Longest Third Date, their story started making headlines back home, with it dawning on Khani she would no longer be able to keep it a secret from her father.
She tells programme makers: ‘It got to the point where my mum was like, “He’s gonna find out so it’s better coming from you before he finds out himself.”‘
In their Costa Rice rented apartment, Khani discusses having the big talk with her dad with Matt, saying she’s going to tell him they’d been dating for some time.
‘So you’re going to lie to him again?’ Matt asks, with Khani saying: ‘Yeah but it’s a lesser lie to help him come around a little bit more.’
Khani then explains she lies to her father because he ‘likes to restrict me’ and she tells porkies so she can ‘live her life freely.’
As she prepares to make the call, Matt tells producers he could tell Khani was ‘anxious’ and had been ‘putting off’ telling the truth to her father for ‘some time.’
Looking nervous, Khani chats to her father over video call and tells him that among her ‘group of friends’ is ‘a guy I’ve kinda been seeing.’
‘Wait. A guy?’ he replies. ‘I thought you said that all of you are girls?’
After clarifying she had just said a ‘group of friends’, her dad remarks: ‘That’s not cool’ particularly as it had been three months.
Fortunately, her dad eventually warms around to the idea, even if Khani does have to tell a white lie she’s not ‘alone’ with Matt.
Khani seems relieved by his response telling the producers she had expected him to be ‘harsher.’
‘He treated me like an adult,’ she continues. ‘And it made me question why I was even lying. It was new for me, opening up to my dad.’
Longest Third Date premieres on Netflix on Tuesday April, 18.
