I had a neighbour’s car towed for facing the wrong direction – am I wrong?

ONE driver who got their neighbour’s car towed when it was on a red line and facing the wrong has asked online if they did the right thing.

Posting on Reddit, the person asked if they were a “jerk” for reporting their neighbour, even though it was parked incorrectly.

The post read: “Had someone in my neighbourhood park a car facing the wrong direction of traffic and over 4 feet from kerb that’s painted red.

“That being said it is a quiet-ish street and I now kind of feel bad after calling the towing people.

“P.s, the car was parked for about 4 hrs 5pm to 9pm-ish, am I the jerk?”

The author, lives in the US where the law states that cars are not allowed to park on a kerb that is painted red.

The rules state: “No stopping, standing, or parking. Red zones are usually for emergency vehicles only, as well as fire hydrants.

“You cannot park in front or, or block, a fire hydrant. Buses may stop at a red curb if it’s marked OK for buses to stop there.”

Motorists across the pond are also not allowed to park on the wrong side of the road, which is typically the left hand side in America.

The main reasoning for this is so drivers don’t pull out head-on into traffic.

In terms of American parking laws, the Reddit user did the right thing getting the car towed, despite the road being in a quiet, residential area.

In the UK, you can park on any side of a street as long as there are no double yellow lines and that your car isn’t obstructing a driveway or road.

The only time this changes is at night, you must park your car facing the direction of the traffic flow.

This is because the passing cars will be able to see your rear reflectors when passing by.

Rule 248 of The Highway Code states: “You must not park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.”

The USA is a whole lot stricter on its parking roadside laws.

There aren’t many roads where you can actually park on the street but if you do happen to find one there’s one important thing to remember: don’t park on the wrong side of the road.

It’s also important not to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.

If your car is in the way and a fire crew needs to use the hydrant, your car could end up getting damaged if they need to move it or work around your car.
