A WOMAN treated herself to a cheap trip to Pisa for just £52, including travel, food and drink, after a stop off in Italy made her trip home to Ireland £162 cheaper.
After flying from Dublin to visit her long-distance boyfriend in Malta, Katie Nolan was shocked to see that a return flight home would cost £214.

Instead, she decided to take a five-hour stop off in Pisa, which significantly reduced her travel costs.
Katie from Kildare, Ireland, spent just £52 on travel, food, drink and even souvenirs during her stop-off in Italy, where she was able to enjoy a freshly baked pizza by the iconic leaning tower of Pisa.
Making use of Ryanair’s affordable flights, Katie turned what would have otherwise been an inconvenience into a mini-day trip.
It went so smoothly that she was still able to get up to attend work the next day.
Katie said: “I was visiting my long-distance boyfriend in Malta. A flight from Malta to Dublin cost more than €250 (£214).
“But flying from Malta to Pisa and staying for five hours to see the leaning tower, eat pizza and then fly back to Dublin was cheaper.”
It’s not the first time Katie has visited other countries to cut costs either.
On trips between Ireland and Spain, it’s often cheaper for her to have a stop-off in the UK.
She said: “I’ve done this a few times via the UK from Spain to Ireland.
“It’s cheaper than going to Dublin for the day, which is one of the most expensive cities in Europe.”
Instead of forking out the £214 for the direct flight, Katie spent £12.87 to fly from Malta to Pisa.
She then spent £10.74 on wine and pizza, £1.72 on two fridge magnets, £1.29 on water and £8.59 return for the train from Pisa airport to the city centre.
Finally, she coughed up £17.18 to fly from Pisa to Dublin, giving her trip a total cost of £52.39.
Katie isn’t the only person to save money by flying to Italy this year, with Callum Ryan heading to Milan to save money on a pizza.
He said he paid just £8 for a last-minute plane ticket from London Stansted.
He then headed to a local restaurant, where he paid just €8.50 (£7.50) for a margarita pizza and another €2.50 (£2.22) for service charge.
Adding that to the flight, it meant he paid just £17.72 – cheaper than a medium Domino’s pizza which costs £19.99.
Meanwhile, this mum flew to Lanzarote for the day and said she paid just £23.
And another woman revealed how she gets £10 return flights to go on holiday for the day across Europe.
