He suffered a broken wrist and tissue damage in his leg but was unable to get any of the biker’s details as he fled the scene.

He recalled: “I was cycling to the nursery to pick up my child.

“As I was turning in this motorbike came out of nowhere on the wrong side of the road and knocked me off my bike.”

The man responsible was never traced but the cyclist was compensated through the English Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB).

The MIB is a non-profit organisation that was originally set up as a private company in 1946.

Since 1988, every insurer that sells motor insurance is required to belong to the group, which runs schemes compensating drivers in specific circumstances.

One of these is the Untraced Driver Agreement scheme, where victims of hit-and-runs can receive a payout for damaged property or personal injury.

In this case, the cyclist received £18,000 to make up for having to borrow money while he recuperated from his injuries as he was unable to work for three months.

He had no idea about the MIB until he got in touch with Hudgells solicitors.

The victim added: “I was looking online to see if there was anything I could do and when I contacted Hudgells they explained they could take up my case through the MIB.

“It’s been absolutely brilliant.

“The compensation has really helped…we can now take the kids out again.”

He’s also been able to pay off all his debts and focus on his recovery.
