‘I fear no one’: Tszyu locks in Mexican opponent

Tim Tszyu has locked in his next opponent as the frustrating wait to fight injured superstar Jermell Charlo continues.

A press conference has been called for Wednesday morning, at which Tszyu will announce a Gold Coast fight with Mexican challenger Carlos Ocampo, putting the WBO super-welterweight interim world title on the line.

The fight is expected to be set for June 18.

The 27-year-old Ocampo has lost just two of his 36 professional fights, both in world title contests against big name fighters.

His losses came against American star Errol Spence Jr. and Mexican compatriot Sebastian Fundora.

“I don’t need to fight, I want to. I fear no one and will fight anyone,” Tszyu said.

“Carlos Ocampo is the perfect test for me right now as his only losses have been at the very top, for titles against the very best.”

The fight has been chosen by Tszyu’s promoter No Limit to keep the Aussie son-of-a-gun active, even though it puts at risk Tszyu’s shot at four-belt champion Charlo, whose hand injury has postponed their bout indefinitely.

No Limit CEO George Rose said Tszyu “isn’t satisfied” with the prospect of one or two fights per year, which is why they made the fight with Ocampo.

“So yes, it’s another massive risk – given a shot at Jermell Charlo and becoming undisputed is on the line again – but he’s done it before and we’re confident he can do it again,” Rose said.

“He has a world-class Mexican in front of him in Carlos Ocampo in what I expect will be an all-out war, but I’m backing Tim to get the job done in style.”
