I drive £52k EV – weather has to be absolutely perfect or there are problems
A DRIVER has revealed how his £52,000 EV has serious issues if the weather isn’t perfect.
Anything less than clear blue skies causes charging problems for Michael Lawlor’s electric Kia EV6.
When The Sun Online visited the UK’s biggest charging hub at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, Michael vented his frustrations to us.
The EV super hub is serviced by routes from the M1, M6, M42 and A45 and supplies enough power to fuel 200 EV’s at once.
The Essex motorist had stopped off at the power base, opened in August by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, on his way home after a weekend away in Manchester.
Keen traveller Michael said: “They have the right idea, it’s a nice set up here but I’m not convinced it is in the right place.
“We’re on our way to Manchester and stopped off for a 20-minute fast charge for £30.
“We were already half full with power which may have got us to our destination but with sweaty palms!
“It’s a 300-mile journey, and in this wet weather we would have probably made it without stopping to re-charge, but in a hot or cold day we get less power.”
He said EV stations were in abundance in France, saying: “Whenever we travel there charging up is never a problem, only in this country.”
This comes as The Sun Online also spoke to Barista Andrew Morrison, who serves at the new Starbucks at the mega charging station.
He said: “This hub is a positive change for the country, and is a step in the right direction for the future of green energy.
“To have it at a place like the NEC makes sense. If they can’t do it and make a success of t, who can? They would be stupid not to try.
“It is still a business and they have to make money.”
The 29-year-old explained they are seeing about 100 cars pull up and charge daily.
“The EV charging, the cafe and drive through all go hand and hand. I love working here and on a break and can come and sit outside and get away from the hustle and bustle,” he added.
Car manufacture Kia has been contacted for comment.
