Hugh Hefner’s son Cooper has come to his defense ahead of new series, Secrets of Playboy.

The upcoming documentary, which airs tonight on A&E, will explore the life of the Playboy mogul, who died in 2017 at the age of 91.

It is set to feature exclusive interviews with those closest to him, including the late star’s past girlfriends and his personal valet, Stefan Tetenbaum.

However, hours before the 10-part series is due to land on our screens, Hefner’s son appeared to take aim at the program on social media.

Taking to Twitter, Cooper posted: ‘Some may not approve of the life my dad chose, but my father was not a liar.

‘However unconventional, he was sincere in his approach and lived honestly. He was generous in nature and cared deeply for people.

‘These salacious stories are a case study of regret becoming revenge.’

The former Playboy magazine founder died in in September, 2017, from sepsis brought on by an E.coli infection.

Secrets of Playboy promises to expose some of Hefner’s ‘complicated legacy’, with ex-girlfriend Holly Madison among those taking part.

Speaking in a trailer ahead of the release, she described his mansion as being ‘cult-like’, and claimed that they were ‘gaslit’.

‘The reason I think the mansion was very cult-like looking back on it is because we were all kind of gaslit and expected to think of Hef as like this really good guy,’ Madison told the camera.

‘And you started to feel like, “Oh, he’s not what they say in the media, he’s just a nice man”.

‘It was so easy to get isolated from the outside world there. You had a 9 o’clock curfew. You were encouraged to not have friends over. You weren’t really allowed to leave unless it was like a family holiday.’

‘The fantasy world of Playboy has been shrouded in secrecy for decades and we are proud to lift the veil on these long-hidden stories,’ Elaine Frontain Bryant, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for A&E, said in a statement.

‘Breaking down barriers and exposing the truth, Secrets of Playboy is a masterful example of brave storytelling that takes an unflinching look at the personal effects of Hugh Hefner’s empire, while also exploring his legacy’s larger influence on our society and modern-day views of sexuality.’

Secrets Of Playboy premieres January 24 on A&E.
