‘Huge’ problem that’s derailed Ferrari star

Ferrari star Charles Leclerc has bemoaned the “huge” problems he says is behind his struggles this season.

While the car is quick in certain situations – he took pole in Azerbaijan – Leclerc crashed twice in Miami, including on his final qualifying lap.

The Monegasque driver is languishing in seventh spot in the championship, having retired from two of the five races to date. He crashed out on the opening lap in Australia in April, and also during sprint qualifying in Baku.

Leclerc finished seventh in Miami, but said the car remains a handful.

“It’s a very similar picture to the beginning of the year, we are competitive in qualifying, but once we come to race day we are struggling like crazy,” Leclerc said.

“The window of our car is so narrow, and whenever you get a little bit out [of it], it has huge consequences on the balance.

“It’s from one corner to the other, and even in one corner sometimes you can have huge understeer, which then goes to huge oversteer, and this is obviously not ideal to have confidence in the car.

“We have a lot of work to do. We need to find something now because we’ve been struggling in the races for a little bit of time now. So, we need to come up with solutions.”

While Leclerc and teammate Carlos Sainz remain frustrated with the car, former Williams driver Ralf Schumacher believes both drivers need to lift their game.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Schumacher singled out Lerclerc for criticism.

“With his mistakes, he shows that he either doesn’t have the maturity or maybe at the end of the day he’s not consistently good (enough) to drive for Ferrari,” he said.

“To be honest, the Ferrari team is currently doing a better job than both drivers.”
