Huge crash at Azerbaijan Grand Prix leaves F2 driver on top of rival

Six cars were involved in a huge crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with one vehicle landing on top of a rival. The accident came at the end of the Formula 2 race held just hours before the F1 sprint this afternoon.

Dennis Hauger hit the wall on the outside of turn one moments after a safety car restart. Victor Martins also collided with the barrier with Jehan Daruvala collecting the Frenchman at high speed.

The Indian youngster was then sent underneath Martins car as the pair collided in sickening scenes. Speaking on team radio after the collision, Daruvala said: “I had nowhere to go. I had nowhere to go.”

Despite the horrific collision, the pair both walked away from the collision. However, F2 commentator Alex Brundle warned the incident could have been a lot worse as he praised the halo protection device.

He explained: “Both Hauger and Martins just cannot make the corner. They don’t have brake performance when they get down there. Chalk up another one for the halo I think.

No front grip, no braking performance, Hauger the same thing. They just overestimated the grip that was down there. The grip  down there was so incredibly low it is very easy to overestimate.”

Theo Pourchaire and Jack Doohan were also involved in separate incidents at the first corner. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc’s brother, Arthur, ran wide on the exit of the corner but avoided contact with the wall.

The race was won by British star and Ferrari junior driver Oliver Bearman with Frederik Vesti second and Jak Crawford third. After the chequered flag, Vesti also blamed tyre warm-up issues for the pile-up in a warning to race officials.

He remarked: “I thought I was braking quite late but both of them were braking later than me ans clearly it was a bit too much. It’s difficult. I nearly made the same mistake later in the lap. When there is such a long safety car you just lose grip and that was tricky today.”

In the post-race cool down room, the trio looked visibly stunned as they watched back footage of the shunt. Race winner Bearman also accepted there was “no grip” at the restarts as they chatted about the collision.
