HPQ Talks at St. Olaves Grammar School – Chinedu Ndukwu, St. Olaves Grammar School
St. Olaves Grammar school hosted their 10th annual HPQ Talks from the 24th to 27th January 2022. With a reduced crowd of students and staff due to social distancing regulations, students undergoing HPQ were able to articulate the importance of their projects, state main themes and arguments, and delve further into future prospects for their research topic.
The HPQ (Higher Project Qualification), completed in Year 11, is an accredited opportunity for pupils to choose any favoured research topic, write an extended essay on it and then present their research findings to an audience. After 6-8 months of rigour, determination, and perseverance, 18 Year 11 students at St.Olaves had only 15 minutes to present their project and speak eloquently about the topics they love. Following each presentation, the audience also had a chance to pose questions to the speakers and all presenters had given detailed, impressively knowledgeable and often thought-provoking answers.
Throughout the week, there was a myriad of themes: political, technological, environmental and fictional. Some intriguing topic titles such as ‘Is international politics a game?’, ‘Will our security systems be 100% secure in the next 10 years?’ and ‘Will Star Wars ships exist in our universe?’ led to educationally enriching evenings with 91% of the audience taking something away from every presentation.
‘It was a pleasure to be wrapped into different worlds and scenarios’ one HPQ student said after listening to presentations of dark matter and black hole theories. ‘It would have been more inspiring and impactful if the number of people allowed increased, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed what each evening had to offer.’
