How your £2 coin could sell for £500

A rare £2 coin in the UK has sold for £500 – and there are still some in circulation.

The coin, which features an image of British war figure Lord Kitchener, was released by the Royal Mint seven years ago to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War.

While a normal version of the 2014 First World War Centenary £2 would not be worth more than its face value, some could be worth hundreds of pounds.

The value of the coin multiplies by 250 times if you spot words “Two Pounds” are missing on the head side.

Experts at Coin Hunter say 5.72 million of these coins were struck for circulation and it appears to be “very rare” to find one without a date.

But it isn’t impossible – the first of its kind sold at a Lockdales auction in March 2020 for £500, reports the Mirror.

It isn’t clear exactly how many of the error versions could be in circulation.

Writing on its Facebook page, Coin Hunter experts said: “Check your coins that feature Lord Kitchener.

“If the heads side does not show ‘TWO POUNDS’ – you have an error that appears to be very rare.

If you suspect you may have a rare coin, you can ask the Royal Mint to take a look and check if it is real.
