This is because of new confusing expiry rules no longer allowing passports to be more than 10 years old (previously being allowed up to 10 years and 10 months).

Thankfully, you can still fly with an expired passport.

Domestic flights across the UK will accept a passport that is no longer in date up to five years.

The easyJet website states: “Photographic ID is required on all domestic flights.

“Here’s a few examples of photographic ID that is accepted.

“A valid passport – an expired passport can be used up to a maximum of five years after expiry.”

For example, this means you could use an expired passport if flying from London Heathrow to Edinburgh.

You can even use a driving license, as long as it has your picture on it.

Of course, if you are leaving the country then your passport will need to be in date.

New rules now require Brits to have at least three months left on their passport to travel to Europe.

Some countries including across Asia require as much as six months left on a passport.

And they can no longer be more than 10 months, so Brits should check their passport start date rather than the expiry date.

For example if your passport starts in May 2013 but expires in November 2023, it is now out of date.

Lots of tourists have been caught out by the confusing rules.

Last month, a woman was left £1,000 out of pocket and banned from her flight after she said she wasn’t aware of the 10 year rule.

Here’s everything you need to know about renewing your passport including how long it takes and how much it costs.
