For Sex Education fans, Ncuti Gatwa needs no introduction.

The TV star, 29, plays the iconic Eric Effiong in the Netflix series – and has won legions of fans as a result.

But Ncuti is about to become a name known around the globe, touted on the posters of many a sci-fi convention, as he has been announced as the new Doctor Who.

Ncuti will be taking over the prestigious role from Jodie Whittaker, who followed Peter Capaldi.

Before the 14th Doctor graces our screens, find out the correct way to pronounce his name.

How to pronounce the name Ncuti Gatwa

‘Ncuti’, a name of African origin, is pronounced ‘shoo-ti‘. ‘Gatwa’ is pronounced ‘gat-wa‘.

The actor’s full name is Mizero Ncuti Gatwa, meaning it appears he prefers to go by his middle name professionally.

Gatwa was born in Kigali, Rwanda in 1992, and settled in Scotland in 1994 after his family fled the Rwandan Genocide.

The Gatwa family have lived in both Edinburgh and Dunfermline – though Ncuti eventually headed to Glasgow’s Royal Conservatoire of Scotland to study a BA degree in acting.

Upon graduation, he performed as part of the Dundee Repertory Theatre, and then moved to London to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.

Gatwa will take the helm from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord and become the first black actor to take on the lead role in the show’s history, after Jodie made history as the first female Doctor.

He’s also set to appear in the 2023’s upcoming Barbie movie – starring Margot Robbie and directed by Greta Gerwig.
