How To Get into Reading And How It Can Help You L.Graves, Epsom College

Reading is a topic that has a huge stigma around young people, that it is boring and useless. However, I believe that it can help teenagers and children in everyday life as well as be a new hobby. Reading has many benefits such as expanding your vocabulary, widens your perspectives and understanding of emotions, it is a form of mental stimulation and can give you inspiration and motivation for new goals, experiences, life decisions.

So, here are my top tips into becoming better at reading.

  1. Firstly, I would recommend finding a genre that interests you, do not feel pressure to have to read the most intellectual, critically acclaimed book. No one is forcing you to read Shakespeare, unless that’s what you want. There are so many genres and sub-genres that there must be one that interests you. Think about what you watch on TV and corollate it to a book genre.
  2. Secondly, do not force yourself to read immense amount. Some people can read 10 books in just one month. But that doesn’t mean you have to. Reading is first and foremost for your enjoyment. And if you feel the need to catch up to people, you are going to force yourself into a slump where you will inevitably stop reading all together.
  3. Thirdly, try pick up a book instead of turning on the TV or going on your phone. Starting to read is the most difficult part. As once you start enjoying the book, you probably won’t want to stop. So, if you are on a bus or a train, rather than going on your phone, read a few chapters of a book. And if you don’t feel like carrying round a heavy book, you can always read on your phone using either the books or kindle app, which will also save you money.

Some good places to buy books would either be The Works, Waterstones, Amazon or WHSmith.

Reading is just another hobby that can benefit your overall wellbeing and health and be a positive distraction from day-to-day life. So, if you have the time pick up a book.
