How to create your own meditation closet, à la Drew Barrymore

As if we didn’t love Drew Barrymore enough, we now know the actress turned talk show host she has her own meditation closet.

Yes, her walk-in wardrobe is bigger than most London flats and yes, it’s quite an A-list celebrity thing to do – but it also sounds pretty great.

The space is decorated with candles and post-it notes with affirmations, such as ‘today is the day you start trusting yourself’ and ‘permission’.

And while you might not have a walk in wardrobe spare to turn into your own sanctuary, there is still something to glean from this idea.

Even having a simple corner or patch of wall dedicated to wellness can be a good thing, and help us get centered when things feel tricky.

Caroline Plumer, psychotherapist and founder of CPPC London, says: ‘Creating a space that you associate with being calming can become a positive “trigger” within itself.

‘It’s important to keep this space just for pleasure, and not let work calls sneak its way into there.

‘If you live with others, it can also be a useful way of setting boundaries and modelling good self-care, by letting them know when you are in that space, you are not be disturbed, you show that you are making your wellbeing a priority.’

Creating an intentional space might also encourage you to invest more time in self-care.

There are things to keep in mind when building your own meditation/wellness corner.

Caroline says: ‘There are plenty of things you might want to include when it comes to a calm corner – and as is often the case with self-care, it really comes down to what works for you.

‘You may want to include affirmations on post it notes, or calming art works, or even photos of happy or calming memories.

‘If you include sound or music in your meditation, it may be wise to keep a pair of headphones specifically in this area so you know exactly where they are, so don’t add to your stress looking for them.’

Try to incorporate something to benefit each sense, or as many as you can.

‘It is great to ground yourself using all your senses,’ says Caroline. ‘So keeping scented candles or essential oils to hand, as well as a cushion or blanket you find soothing to touch can be helpful.

‘For some of us, life is already cluttered and overwhelming, so it may be that we want to keep the space as simple and minimalistic as possible, and that’s fine too,’ she adds.

Certain colours are said to be calming, so may be worth adding. Those are greens, blues and greys. But also include your favourite colours – anything that you enjoy seeing.

Affirmations, which feature heavily in Drew’s closet, can be a helpful way of boosting confidence.

‘However, if you feel you are feeling down regularly, or are struggling with your confidence on a regular basis, it might be wise to explore why that’s happening and perhaps seek some professional support,’ Caroline adds.
