How Paloma Faith celebrates Christmas at home: ‘A right old knees up’
What does your house look like at Christmas?
I love Christmas. The decorations go up the first week in December. We have a big fake tree – I’ve had it for a decade and it looks real. I think fake is better for the environment – and I hate hoovering up needles!
I go mad for decorations. Most of them are vintage and I don’t change the theme every year as that’s just not sustainable.
But I add a few hilarious modern baubles each year to the tree – I have an avocado on toast, a bear dressed in bondage, a full fry-up, a hand sanitiser and Santa in a mask.
What are your favourite festive traditions?
I hate turkey – I’d rather have chicken and a bit of fish. I make sausage rolls instead of pigs in blankets.
I like stuffing, and Brussels sprouts – but with a twist as I prefer them roasted in the oven with balsamic vinegar and honey.
When I was a kid instead of having a Christmas stocking, we put out a pillowcase for Santa – and I do the same with my two kids now. They only get presents from Santa, not off me. I don’t mind him getting all the glory!
How will you celebrate this year?
I’m usually like, ‘Everyone come to mine!’ and we have a right old knees-up. There’s always someone who can play the piano and we have a singalong and play games.
This is the first year ever I’ve decided not to have all my friends, their cousins, uncles, aunts and anybody sleeping rough on the streets round for Christmas.
I have had such a difficult year in more ways than one, the worst year of my life. It’s been overwhelming and I just want to hunker down with the family and keep it small.
I’ll spend Christmas Day in my pyjamas and leave it up to Santa to provide the entertainment. There will be games with the kids and we’ll probably watch Gremlins, which is my favourite festive film.
On saying that, I’m very bad at doing small and I’ve already invited our neighbours over – so come Christmas Day there will be 15 people here that I don’t know very well!
