How much it costs to run air conditioning all night – July 2023 price
Lately, the UK has experienced remarkably warm temperatures and some individuals are quietly hoping that summer has finally arrived. To prepare for the heat, some may be contemplating the purchase of an air conditioning system to stay cool..
With the UK already seeing heatwaves leading to temperatures of 30 degrees or more in places, it’s no surprise that members of the public are looking to cool off – especially during hot, muggy nights.
Whether it’s working out whether to keep doors open, close the shades, or the best positioning for a fan, there are multiple tactics households can use to fight the heat.
Air conditioning units can be expensive to install. However, their cooling power is virtually unmatched, and the added bonus of many units filtering pollen – a lifeline for hay fever suffers.
But, should you get tempted, how much would it cost to run an air con unit all night?
Here is what you need to know.
How much does it cost to run air conditioning all night?
Your first step when working out how much your air conditioning unit might cost you to run all night is to establish just how much it will cost you per hour.
From July 1, 2023, most energy consumers will be paying the new Ofgem Energy Price Cap rate, meaning average bills for typical-use households will be £2,074 yearly.
This works out at 30p (per kilowatt hour) for electricity customers.
In order to work out how much your unit will cost you, you’ll need to establish how much electricity it uses.
According to comparison service Uswitch, built-in models will generally use around 2.7 kilowatts per hour.
This means that 0.30p x 2.7 leaves you with an hourly rate of 81p.
Assuming you sleep for around eight hours a night (us neither, but oh well), that leaves you with a nightly bill of £6.48.
By contrast, portable units use around 1 kilowatt per hour, meaning you’ll be paying 30p per hour for use.
Again, assuming an eight-hour night’s sleep (*sigh*), that means you’ll be paying £2.40 per night.
It’s important to remember that the amount of electricity your air conditioning unit uses will vary depending on the unit’s power.
However, the calculation for working out how much it is going to cost you is relatively simple:
Electricity cost (currently 30p per kWh) x air con unit’s electricity use per hour x number of hours used.
