How long is Carson Wentz out? Latest updates, details on Colts quarterback’s foot injury

It didn’t take long for the Carson Wentz era to get messy in Indianapolis.

The Colts’ new quarterback is dealing with an injury that could keep him out for quite a while. The malady popped up in practice on Thursday, July 30, and quickly after that the team and Wentz elected to repair the issue with surgery.

Now, the question isn’t about how the former Eagles starter will perform with his new team. It’s about when he’ll be on the field for the Colts.

How long will Carson Wentz be out?

Wentz will be out for five to 12 weeks as a result of his foot injury, per Colts coach Frank Reich. Stephen Holder of The Athletic reported that Wentz is having a bone removed from his injured foot.

Originally, Wentz reportedly hoped to avoid surgery. The Colts hoped that he wouldn’t have to miss many — if any — regular-season games, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

However, they’ll now be sweating out Wentz’s return. The five-week timetable would put him on track to return ahead of the Colts’ Week 1 matchup with the Seahawks. The 12-week timetable would keep him out until late October/early November.

If Wentz is unable to return to action before Week 1, the Colts would have to start one of Jacob Eason, Sam Ehlinger, Jalen Morton or Hundley at quarterback. Hundley has the most NFL experience while Eason has been with the Colts the longest, as he enters his second season. Ehlinger is a good runner, so perhaps he’ll play in some packages if Wentz misses time.

What is Carson Wentz’s injury?

Wentz is dealing with a foot injury that he suffered during Colts practice on Thursday. He suffered the injury while practicing a roll-out play.

“He got hurt during a team period when he was rolling out,” Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady said, per the Indy Star. “Planted to go throw and felt a little twinge in his foot.”

It isn’t clear at this time which foot Wentz injured.

Carson Wentz injury timeline

At Colts practice on Thursday, July 30, Wentz felt a “twinge in his foot,” offensive coordinator Marcus Brady said. The Colts are approaching the injury to their newly acquired franchise quarterback cautiously.

“He’s with the docs, trying to figure what out the process is,” said Brady, per ESPN. “Still evaluating what the next move is, how bad it is. Then we’ll go from there.”

On Aug. 1, Rapoport reported that Wentz was looking to avoid surgery. His plans were to “rest and rehab” his foot injury.

However, just a day later, Rapoport confirmed that Wentz would have surgery.

The injury will keep him out up to 12 weeks, meaning he will return to action in late October/early November at the latest. In a best-case scenario, he could be back on the field in five weeks, just in time to play in Week 1 against the Seahawks.

Carson Wentz injury history

Wentz has dealt with plenty of injury problems during his NFL career. He has only played a full, 16-game season twice in his five-year NFL career. He played all 16 games as a rookie and played all 16 regular-season games in 2019. However, he was knocked out of his playoff debut that season after suffering a concussion following a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jadeveon Clowney.

Here’s a brief look at the injuries that have caused Wentz to miss time during his NFL career.

  • 2017: Wentz suffered a torn ACL during a Week 14 game against the Rams. He missed the remaining three regular-season games and the postseason. Nick Foles led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title in Wentz’s absence.
  • 2018: Wentz missed the first two games of the season while continuing to recover from the torn ACL. He started 11 games before the Eagles shut him down with a back injury. Once again, he was replaced by Foles.
  • 2019: Wentz played all 16 regular-season games but was knocked out of the Eagles’ wild card game because of a concussion.
  • 2020: Wentz played in just 12 games for the Eagles. He was benched in favor of Jalen Hurts after throwing a league-high 15 interceptions and suffering an NFL-worst 50 sacks.
