How Guardians of the Galaxy’s Villain Introduced Marvel to a New Hulk

An antagonist from the new Guardians of the Galaxy game made her debut going head-to-head with one of Marvel’s youngest Hulks.

As Marvel heroes and villains appear in various different media, they’ve been reinvented as they’ve faced against other characters they may have never encountered in their original appearances — including a major antagonist from Guardians of the Galaxy.

The relatively obscure character Lady Hellbender is a villain for the Guardians of the Galaxy in their new video game, but she was originally an initial foe (and possible love interest) for Amadeus Cho during his stint as the Totally Awesome Hulk in comics.

In the Guardians of the Galaxy video game, Lady Marguerite Hellbender is quickly established as a powerful enemy of the titular team. A monster collector from across the cosmos, she spends a good portion of the game chasing after the Guardians and putting a bounty on them after they enraged her and killed one of her creatures. However, when the full scope of the threat to the galaxy is exposed, she becomes a reluctant ally to the team and helps save the day — establishing that while she may be an enemy of the team for their actions, she’s not necessarily evil by any real stretch of the imagination. This is similar to her Earth-616 counterpart, who debuted in Totally Awesome Hulk #1 by Greg Pak and Frank Cho.

After Bruce Banner was exposed to a level of radiation that was too dangerous even for him, Amadeus Cho offered to help siphon some of the radiation. Although the process was a success and reverted the Hulk to Banner, Amadeus was bombarded with the energy himself and become a heroic new version of the Hulk. Working with his sister Maddy Cho, Amadeus quickly threw himself into the field and found himself working alongside Miles Morales and She-Hulk in a battle against a pair of powerful aliens who were seeking monsters like Fing Fang Foom. Unfortunately, it turned out they were the allies of Lady Hellbender — who introduced herself as the Monster queen of Seknarf Nine and quickly attacked the Hulk for interfering in her attempts to defeat (and then capture) Foom for her collection.

Committed to finding monsters and bringing them to her world for safe-keeping, Lady Hellbender was surprised when Amadeus Cho proved himself in battle against her and even found a way to defeat Fing Fang Foom,  deciding that this made proved that Amadeus himself was the most dangerous monster on Earth. Capturing the Totally Awesome Hulk and bringing him aboard her ship, the pair quickly proved to be surprisingly flirtatious with one another.  The two shared a brief kiss, and even after his friends arrived and helped free him from her grasp, Hellbender made sure to invite Amadeus to one day return to her side.

Hellbender was a fresh face for Amadeus to face, and a fitting one for the teenaged hero to come up against. On top of her already impressive skill and abilities, her confidence and craftiness contrasted well against Amadeus as he tried to stay ahead of her. Alongside the monsters she brought into the situation, Lady Hellbender was an ideal first major foe for Amadeus to fight, proving that he was more than his impressive intellect. This showed that Amadeus could still muster enough strength as the Hulk to hold his own against the kind of threats that will inevitably find themselves in the path of the Jade Giant, regardless of which human the Hulk eventually transforms back into.
