How Death of the Justice League’s Art Takes Its Cues From Lord of the Rings

The epic scale of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy helped artist Rafa Sandoval navigate the bold premise of “Death of the Justice League.”

The dramatic scale of the Justice League’s final battle  in “Death of the Justice League” was inspired by one of fantasy’s most famous epics.

To capture the magnitude of the book’s premise, artist Rafa Sandoval looked to some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters for inspiration. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the artist explained that Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy helped him understand how best to frame the story’s action. “The Lord of the Rings helped me plan shots and how I could show the battle, as well as how to transition from the battle to the most critical moment, the death of the Justice League.” Specifically, Sandoval said he juxtaposed distant shots with close-ups to immerse readers in the emotions of the storyline.

DC’s “Death of the Justice League” unfolds in Justice League #75, an oversized issue written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Sandoval. The story coincides with the 30th anniversary of Superman #75, which killed the Man of Steel. Like “Death of Superman” before it, Williamson says the Justice League’s untimely demise will have far-reaching consequences for the rest of the DC Universe. “We want people to understand, this is serious and this is gonna have a major impact in the DCU moving forward.”

“Death of the Justice League” is set to kill nine of the titular team’s ten members. Some of DC’s finest are on the chopping block, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (John Stewart), Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, Green Arrow, Black Canary and Zatanna. Following the deaths of these heroes, Justice League will go on an indefinite hiatus, further enforcing the significance of the heroes’ absences.

Williamson says the Justice League’s impending doom is the culmination of plot points that began in Infinite Frontier #0, which established the unseen cosmic threat of the Dark Army. Now, the Army is ready to strike, and the Justice League is about to find out that they aren’t up to the task of defending the Multiverse on their own. “Last year was a lot of fun and games, but when this story starts, it’s the beginning of the third act. We’re going to see things get darkest before the dawn.”

While the League’s forecast looks bleak, the group is currently colliding with the champions of tomorrow in Justice League vs. The Legion of Super-Heroes. The storyline, written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Scott Godlewski, sees the two teams take on the Great Darkness, a cosmic threat that encompasses multiple eras of the DC Universe.
