Hotel Inspector says guests should order popular breakfast item to ‘test’ hotels

Hotelier Alex Polizzi has helped to salvage some of Britain’s worst-run hotels and B&Bs and now owns her own business – The Star in East Sussex. While the expert is well-versed in spotting a good hotel when she sees one, Alex revealed foolproof hack guests can use to put their chosen accommodation to the test. And it’s as simple as ordering a poached egg.

While cleanliness, comfort, and affordability are all essential when staying in a hotel, food is another big factor.

Speaking on the comedic podcast ‘Help I Sexted My Boss’ with the UK’s leading etiquette coach, William Hanson and broadcast presenter, Jordan North, the hotelier shared her best travel tip for guests to use in restaurants.

The Hotel Inspector told the podcast presenters: “The test of a hotel kitchen is a poached egg.”

William agreed that “so many people can’t do poached eggs”, and it’s a surefire way to put holiday accommodation to the test.

In an episode of her hit Channel 5 show, The Hotel Inspector, Alex admitted that breakfast is something “many hotels get wrong, adding that it’s “not that hard”.

The industry expert uses the hack herself by always ordering poached eggs for breakfast when she doing her inspections.

Similar tricks are used by competitors on the Channel 4 show Four In a Bed, with many B&B owners testing their rivals on their ability to get the whites perfectly cooked with a gooey golden yolk.

But while she suggested ordering a poached egg to set the benchmark for hotel kitchens, the expert noted that “nice ingredients” are also crucial for a “perfect breakfast”.

Claiming that she does “a wonderful poached egg”, Alex revealed exactly how she makes this breakfast staple.

While many people believe adding vinegar to the water is the key to the perfect egg, the hotelier explained that this isn’t the case.

In fact, it’s all about “the spin” of the water when cracking the raw product into the water.

Alex said: “It doesn’t work with a very fresh egg funnily enough, it works better with an egg that’s been out of the fridge for a while.”

The hotelier also shared her unique serving suggestion for perfectly poached eggs, which presenter Jordan North admitted she had “got him into”.

Alex enjoys marmite on toast with soft whites and gooey yolk on top, which she branded the “breakfast of queens”.

She said: “It’s my speciality but I think I’ve got a lot of people into it.”

Among other advice shared by the expert during the podcast episode, the inspector warned that “you don’t always get what you pay for” when it comes to hotels.
