Hosting A Foreign Exchange Student – Niamh Murphy, Dame Alice Owens School
It was stressful to prepare for this, and there was lots to do. We had to prepare sleeping arrangements, make sure we had enough or the right food, arrange travel and plan events for the weekend. During the weekdays, their school planned different trips for them to go on while we had our normal school day, such as going to the London Eye or the Emirates Stadium. They were then picked up by us at the end of the day and taken to their respective homes. On the Friday, I took mine to my explorer group and went on a mini tour of Holborn. I tried to translate parts of what the guide was talking about so that she also enjoyed it. That finished early, so afterwards we went to an exchange party that was being held at a friend’s house. The next day, we went into London to see Tower Bridge. It was really insightful to understand how and why it was built. Then on the Sunday, my Spanish exchange said that she liked golf, so we went to play.
Fortunately, it was very easy to communicate with our Spanish exchanges as their English was brilliant! Sometimes they didn’t know what a word was, but we managed to understand what was meant. This meant that by the end of the week we were all great friends, and were very sad to see them go. But, we cannot wait to see them in May.
