Hollywood actor Treat Williams dies aged 71 after motorbike crash

Hollywood star Treat Williams has died at the age of 71 following a motorcycle crash in Vermont.

The actor was known for a broad range of roles both on the stage and on screen. Over the course of his career, which spanned six decades, he was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.

Barry McPherson, Williams’ agent, confirmed the news of his death on Monday evening in a statement released by People.

It read: “He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off. I’m just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.

“He was an actor’s actor. Filmmakers loved him. He’s been the heart of the Hollywood since the late 1970s.

“He was really proud of his performance this year. He’s been so happy with the work that I got him. He’s had a balanced career.”

The fatal incident occurred on Route 30 by Long Trail Auto near Dorset, Vermont at around 5pm on Monday evening, according to reports.

According to fire chief for Dorset, Vermont, Jacob Gribble, the crash involved Williams’ motorcycle and a single car.

Williams began his acting career as Danny Zuko in the stage production of Grease between 1972 and 1980. The hit musical film, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, was released in 1978.

Williams was also known for his role in the 1975 thriller Deadly Hero, as well as a supporting part in The Ritz. He shot to worldwide attention following his stellar performance in Hair in 1979.

The movie, which was based on the 1967 Broadway musical, earned Williams his first Golden Globes nomination. His second Golden Globe Awards nomination came in 1981 for his role in Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City, and a third came three years later in the TV film A Streetcar Named Desire.

In total, Williams starred in more than 75 films and series.

The actor tweeted just hours before his death, sharing a photo of his land while sitting atop a tractor. “Mowing today. Wish I could bottle the scent,” he wrote.

Williams is survived by his wife Pam Van Sant and two children.
