Holiday boost for families heading to Spain this half term

FACE masks are no longer required by people using public transport in Spain.

Brits heading to Spain will be relieved to know that the restrictions have been lifted from today, February 8.

A notice was published by the government in its Official State Gazette, with the move coming into force immediately.

It means tourists and locals will no longer need to wear face masks on public transport.

The measure was announced by a string of government officials, including Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, at a press conference in Spain.

Carolina Darias said: “We are in a moment of enormous stabilisation due to Covid-19 and a clear downward trend, which is why we have the lowest data for the pandemic.”

Despite the relaxation of these measures, Spanish health officials are calling for people to remain caution in crowded places.

Masks will continue to be mandatory in hospitals and health centres, pharmacies and for visitors and workers in residences and social health centres.

The mask rules has been relaxed because Covid cases remain low, despite fears they could rise following the Christmas holidays and opening of the Chinese borders,

Several regions have long been demanding the end of face masks, especially on the subway, after claiming no one monitors their use. 

Even though mask-wearing on public transport has been lifted across Spain, some tourist hotspots have hinted the return of other restrictions.

Andalusia, a popular region with British holidaymakers, has become the first major location to hint about the return of regulations.

President of the regional government, Juanma Moreno, has asked for “maximum precautions” and wouldn’t rule out the “adoption of preventative measures.”

The news comes after Spain brought back some of their Covid restrictions due to soaring Covid cases abroad.

Passengers arriving at Spanish airports from China will now be screened for Covid, with arrivals needing a negative Covid test or proof of vaccination.

The measure will remain in place until at least February 15, Spain’s health ministry said in a statement, with travellers arriving from China required to undergo a temperature check and a Covid-19 test.
