Hogwarts Legacy Shows Off New Cutscene At Developer Conference
Autodesk, a 3D-rendering software company most known for its architectural renderer, AutoCAD, recently held a conference in which game studios spoke on how the company’s programs had helped them during development.
One of these studios was WB-owned Avalanche Software, which showcased how they used Autodesk’s character animation and effects programs to create their cinematics for the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy. As an example, they presented a previously unseen cutscene of a few students trying to deal with something they have no business dealing with (in classic Harry Potter fashion).
The cutscene features our customizable playable protagonist and a side character called Natsai Onai who was revealed in the State of Play overview back in March 2022. As described back then, these companions can teach you new abilities and accompany you on your journeys, as you get closer to them. Natsai is a Gryffindor as seen above; she is described as a “brave adventurer driven by the justice she seeks.” In the prior State of Play, we actually saw a small portion of this cutscene, but only the moment where she runs to the closing doors; this snippet contextualizes that.
Why the bad guys are trying to restrain a hippogriff is unknown, but fans are undoubtedly happy to see a beast of its kind present in the game. It’s already been confirmed that the game will have some sort of flying, with previously revealed footage of the main character soaring around in their broom. A past leak supposedly found, within the game’s website, that one of the deluxe edition bonuses was a thestral mount, so it may be possible that other types of mounts to be included as well, besides just brooms.
The cutscene wasn’t all that was found though. There were also a few screenshots of the character creator process for players, and even a screenshot of the developer side of character creation, specifically for one Abraham Ronen. Chandler Wood, community manager for Avalanche, confirmed via Twitter that this is the school’s Charms professor and that “he is indeed a Slytherin.”
Some fans express disappointment over the fact that the options only show preset face shapes, and not more detailed customization options where you can adjust every aspect of your face. That would be disappointing for many, but it’s important to keep in mind that games sometimes provide preset options to then customize and that the game is still far away, so it could be they’re still working on the more detailed creator.
And finally, many took this as another excuse to keep clamoring for information about a release date. There was a recent Hogwarts Legacy art book which changed its release date on Amazon, but that’s quite far from a confirmation. With the game still slated for Holiday 2022, and the year now reaching August, the silence on this matter is becoming more unusual. PlayStation seemingly has some advertising deal with them, since even though the game is multiplatform, its big reveals are always in PlayStation conferences. They could be waiting for the next big PlayStation showcase to reveal this, but otherwise, a delay is looking more and more likely.
