Historic Holden takes centre stage for racing return

A car that began a historic decade for Holden in Australian motorsport is set to make its racing return.

The Holden VE Commodore that Craig Lowndes raced in the 2010 Supercars season has been brought back to life.

It was one of two cars run by Triple Eight Race Engineering that year and marked the first time the team had campaigned the iconic Red Lion.

Since taking the reins of Briggs Motor Sport in 2003, the team ran Ford Falcons in the touring car competition.

A switch to Holden came for the 2010 season after Ford dropped its support for the team despite winning two titles on the trot.

Triple Eight went on to win the Supercars drivers’ championship eight times, winning the teams’ championship 10 times, and the Bathurst 1000 thrice.

Now, the car will compete in the reborn V8 Touring Car Series as part of the SpeedSeries bill, making a cameo at Phillip Island on May 12-14.

Dubbed chassis 888A-025, the car contested the first half of the 2010 season and then the 2012 season in its entirety.

Lowndes finished runner-up that year to teammate Jamie Whincup.

Policina hailed the return of the V8 Touring Car Series, which is expected to feature some iconic cars of the 2000s and 2010s era.

“I think its refreshing the series has re-established itself to allow the blueprint cars to run, it was previously an outstanding category and when it obviously merged with another series during covid, it was a shame to lose the championship,” said Policina.

“But I am overjoyed it has been reestablished, and it’s going to be great to see the cars that have been sitting in the sheds finally back out on track.

“It will be good to see the numbers build again, it’s really refreshing this category has reemerged and I will be supporting it as much as I can.

“My intent is to go out there and focus on achieving an outright podium in every single race, but winning the privateers cup is of course an absolute priority at this stage,” he added.

“It is always good if you can do well in the outright, it always depends on circumstances in each race, but we are heading to Phillip Island to make up as many places as possible and get ourselves a result.

“It is very difficult to tell how competitive it will be, but I’m looking forward to it.”

The car is set to race in the retro Peter Brock livery it campaigned in the 2012 Bathurst 1000.

The five-round V8 Touring Car Series begins at Phillip Island before events at Winton (June 9-11), Queensland Raceway (August 11-13), Sandown (September 8-10), and Mount Panorama (November 10-12).
