Hinge users can now specify if they’re looking for ethical non-monogamy
Consensual and ethical non-monogamy is on the rise – that means more people are looking to find relationships that don’t fit the usual mould of exclusivity.
This could be anything from swinging (swapping sexual partners in a relationship) to polyamory (having multiple relationships with different people at the same time).
But with such relationship setups still making up a minority of what people in the dating pool are looking for, it can be difficult to find compatible partners.
That’s why Hinge has launched a new ‘relationship type’ feature, which allows users to specify what kind of relationship they’re looking for on their profile.
Options include ‘monogamy’, ‘non-monogamy’ or ‘still figuring out’.
There’s also a ‘backstory’ section, where users can share more details about what exactly they’re after.
The feature will sit in the ‘virtues section’ on Hinge profiles and should hopefully empower people to be clear and upfront about their dating goals.
It comes after research found that 15% of Gen Z and LGBTQ+ Hinge users are either specifically interested in consensual non-monogamy or exploring their relationship type.
‘Non-monogamy is an umbrella-term that covers different forms of non-exclusivity,’ explains Logan Ury, Hinge’s director of relationship science.
For example, she tells Metro.co.uk, ‘people who are not romantically and/or sexually exclusive with a single partner, partners who date other people independently of each other, partners who date other people together, relationship anarchists, and many more.’
She says that asking ‘what are you looking for’ means much more than just ‘do you want marriage and kids’.
‘Hinge wants to help users know if someone’s dating goals match theirs from the moment they look at a profile,’ she continues.
‘While most Hinge daters want monogamous relationships, Gen Z daters are increasingly unsure of the type of relationship they want and are open to non-monogamous relationships.’
The new feature comes after Hinge added a ‘dating intentions’ feature this summer, which gives users the opportunity to be upfront about their intentions, with options ranging from looking for a life partner to a short term fling.
