Wipro’s Azim Premji came in second with an annual donation of Rs 484 crore. Premji is the only living Indian to feature in the EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century list.
With a donation of Rs 190 crore, India’s richest man Gautam Adani was seventh on the list.
Fifteen people made an annual donation of over Rs 100 crore, while 20 people donated over Rs 50 crore and 43 donated over Rs 20 crore.
AM Naik, group chairman of L&T, donated Rs 142 crore.
Nithin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath, co-founders of stockbroking platform Zerodha, donated Rs 100 crore.

With donations of Rs 213 crore each, Subroto Bagchi and NS Parthasarathy, co-founders of mid-tier IT services provider Mindtree, became a part of the top 10 in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022.
This is the ninth annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India. Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalents from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022.
This year’s EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 features individuals who have donated Rs 5 crore or more during the period under review.
“Our focus remains the same on bringing forth one of the most authoritative lists of philanthropists in India. Like every year, we aim to document and analyse the evolving patterns of philanthropic giving in the country,” said Naghma Mulla, CEO, EdelGive Foundation.
Over the last five years, the number of donors who have given more than Rs 100 crore has grown from two to 15, and over Rs 50 crore, from five to 20, said Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and chief researcher, Hurun India.
“Considering the wealth creation potential of India and if the billionaires keep up with philanthropy, I expect these numbers to at least double over the next five years,” he said.
Cumulative personal donations grew by 50% to Rs 3,097 crore, and this constitutes 55% of donations on the list.
Donations towards environment and sustainability increased by 46% to Rs 193 crore, compared to last year.
With total donations estimated at $102.4 billion, Jamsetji Tata (1839-1904), was the world’s biggest philanthropist of the last century in the 2021 EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century, a ranking of the world’s most generous individuals from the past century.
