Haunting close-up of ant’s face is ‘stuff of nightmares’ in photo competition
IF you think this is a scene from a horror movie think again.
What you’re looking at is a scarily close photo of a real ant’s face.
The shocking shot reveals everything from skin bumps, to the hairs on its chin.
It’s zoomed in so close that we don’t actually see the critter’s eyes.
Those red dots are part of the ant’s antennae, which give it a much more menacing appearance.
The image was taken by Dr. Eugenijus Kavaliauskas and submitted to Nikon’s 2022 Small World photography competition.
His own website features even more jaw-dropping snaps of creepy crawlies.
It didn’t win but was praised among the Images of Distinction.
That hasn’t stopped the photo from grabbing the attention of people online.
“Image from a horror movie? Nope,” one commented.
“That’s the very real face of an ant. An ant. Now you have to think about that all night.”
“aw come on!!! how am i supposed to sleep now,” another said.
“I feel sick,” a third admitted.
The winning image was a stunning shot of a gecko’s fluorescent hand – more specifically, a Madagascar giant day gecko.
Grigorii Timin, who took the hand photo, said: “This embryonic hand is about 3mm (0.12in) in length, which is a huge sample for high-resolution microscopy.
“The scan consists of 300 tiles, each containing about 250 optical sections, resulting in more than two days of acquisition and approximately 200GB of data.”
