Harry Styles Love at Tour Wembley Stadium review – a masterclass in modern pop

There’s something special about Harry Styles. A mixture of talent, star power and sheer likability, the One Direction alum has transcended into a global phenomenon. Last night, the first of four sell out shows at London’s Wembley stadium, was a masterclass in modern pop. The singer, who has been on the road with his Love on Tour show for the past two years, kicked off his set with Daydream. “Honey I’m home,” the 29-year-old west Londoner told the 90,000-strong crowd.

Clad in a heart-print sequin romper, he looked part Freddie, part Elton, part Mick – and every bit Harry Styles.

Golden and Adore You followed, twirling into the hot summer evening like a helium balloon.

The big hits – Watermelon Sugar et al – were weighted towards the end of the set, and as a result the show kept its momentum throughout.

A rocky rendition of What Makes You Beautiful, Harry’s first single in his boyband era, was a nice touch, especially for those in the audience who remember him from X Factor 13 years ago.

Late Night Talking, Music For A Sushi Restaurant, and Sign of the Times were other highlights.

Fine Line, played acoustically by Harry on guitar, was brilliant and allowed his voice to shine.

“Please feel free to be whoever it is you want to be,” he said before Treat People With Kindness, during which – in celebration of Pride Month – he held a rainbow flag aloft.

Elsewhere, after spotting a sign in the crowd, he helped a female fan come out for the first time.

Wembley is gargantuan enough to make even the most seasoned concert goer dizzy.

And indeed for some younger fans this may well have been their first gig.

“We can stop any time, if you need anything just let me know. We’re going to stay safe and have fun together,” said Harry, who later did pause to help someone in the crowd.

As the show drew to a close with As It Was and Kiwi, he took a final bow, and thanked his excellent female-heavy band.

There were no gimmicks to Harry’s set, no covers either. He gave the people what they wanted – him.

Sincere, dynamic – Harry Styles is the popstar of a generation.

“I’ll remember this for the rest of my life,” he said.

I believe him.
