Harry Kane sets date to break Wayne Rooney’s England goal record

England and Tottenham striker Harry Kane is aiming to breaking Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney’s Three Lions goal record in 2022.

Rooney called time on his playing career with 53 international goals, beating fellows Reds great Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing tally of 50. Kane sits five off Rooney’s record, but has scored seven times in his previous two England games.

England have a friendly double-header against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast over the next seven days, by which time Kane could be within touching distance of Rooney’s all-time tally.

“I want to play as many games as possible,” the 28-year-old skipper on Wednesday said in a press conference. “I’ll be ready whenever I’m needed.”

He added: “I would love to break that record.

“Hopefully, with the games we have this year, that will be possible. I am in a really good place at the moment.”

Kane, who is also England captain, is looking to achieve the feat in far fewer games, boasting just 67 caps to his name compared to Rooney’s 120 appearances for England – the second-highest.
