Harry Hill admits his TV Burp jokes did sometimes go ‘too far’

Harry Hill is well aware that his jokes on TV Burp were sometimes a little too much.

The comedian fronted the show on ITV from 2001 until 2012, giving it a good run with 161 episodes, plus five specials.

He became known and loved for his chaotic antics, taking a humourous look over the week’s TV and, essentially, taking the mick out of people.

Fan favourite moments included the slapstick ‘fight’ segment, TV Highlight of the Week, TV Burp Poetry Corner, plus various other spoofs.

However, Harry – real name Matthew Keith Hall – looks back today and cringes a little.

In quotes obtained by Daily Star, the funny man, 58, explained that he worries now that he took things too far.

‘We always used to say it was a celebration,’ he said.

‘But the truth is, if you look at it, some of it was quite harsh.

‘I think we did go a bit far. After a while, Jamie Oliver didn’t let us use any clips of his shows.’

And despite fans being desperate for the show to be revived, we have some sad news, as Harry can’t see it happening.

‘I get asked to bring it back at least once a day. If you go on social media, I get comments asking for it to come back,’ he said, clearly well aware of the demand.

But, unfortunately for us, producers haven’t given him the call.

‘That would have to be the first step,’ the You’ve Been Framed host explained. ‘And ITV hasn’t done that.’

And it seems the broadcaster believed the series had run its course when the credits rolled for the final time.

‘When I said I wanted to finish the show in 2012, they didn’t try to persuade me to keep doing it.

‘I had a good relationship with them and they knew I was fed up with doing it.’

TV Burp isn’t the only Harry Hill show to have received the axe, despite its popularity.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that You’ve Been Framed had been given the chop after 33 years on air.

ITV – which first aired the show in 1990 – announced that there will be no new series in 2023, and there are no plans for it to return next year either.

It was said that You’ve Been Framed being ‘shelved’ is a ‘sad sign of the times’, given the popularity of social media as a source for hilarious clips.
