Harley Quinn Dons Her Classic Costume on Artgerm’s Fan Expo Variant Covers

Harley’s classic outfit returns in a special variant cover illustrated by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau for Fan Expo conventions throughout 2022.

Stanley “Artgerm” Lau is bringing back Harley Quinn’s classic red, black and white jester outfit for an exclusive cover variant of The Batman Adventures #12 only available to attendees of Fan Expo’s various conventions throughout 2022.

Lau, renowned for his variant covers showcasing the leading ladies of DC and Marvel, recreated Harley when she first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series — a look that the anti-hero hasn’t consistently worn since prior to DC’s New 52 reboot in 2011. Lau’s cover accompanies several other variants, including glow-in-the-dark editions and minimalistic covers that only feature The Batman Adventures logo, that will be given out to Fan Expo attendees as “blind bags.” The first convention is Fan Expo Philadelphia, which runs from April 8-10, followed by a number of others across the United States and Canada.

“This collaboration with DC and the legendary Stanley Lau is just another example of how Fan Expo is taking it to the next level,” said Fan Expo HQ Vice President Andrew Moyes. “Every single variant of this comic will be a treasure for collectors, especially those who love Harley Quinn. We hope the opportunity to secure these special and rare editions amplifies the excitement for our shows in 2022 that much more.”

The Batman Adventures #12, originally published in 1993, featured the story “Batgirl: Day One.” Written by Kevin Puckett and illustrated by Mike Parobeck, the issue marks Harley’s first appearance in comics and was also the first Batman Adventures issue to not prominently feature the Dark Knight, who temporarily leaves Gotham in the story. Instead, Batgirl takes the lead, with Barbara Gordon donning her vigilante costume as she attends her friend Sandy Vanocouer’s costume party. The party is soon crashed by Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, who hope to hold Sandy for ransom.

After butting heads, Batgirl, Harley and Ivy are all taken captive by Catwoman, who happens to be planning a diamond heist in a neighboring building. The issue ends with Batgirl confronting Catwoman on a rooftop, outsmarting her to take possession of the diamond and slyly telling her worried father that she “wasn’t anywhere near the action [and] spent the whole time eating munchies.”

Following her comic debut in The Batman Adventures #12, Harley Quinn would make the transition into mainstream Batman continuity in 1999 with the one-shot Batman: Harley Quinn.
