Hammers see off Premier League rivals Down Under
A crowd of 46,266 looked on as Lukasz Fabianski made a good save to deny Harry Kane from close range early on, then thwarted Oliver Skipp before Divin Mubama had a shot charged down.
And the Hammers, having beaten Perth Glory 6-2 on Saturday, took the lead on 18 minutes when Jarrod Bowen curled the ball to the far post for Danny Ings to power a header into the net.
It was 2-0 just five minutes later as a corner was played short to Emerson, whose delivery to the near post allowed 18-year-old Mubama to glance the ball past Guglielmo Vicario.
Kane fired a free-kick into West Ham’s defensive wall before warm applause in the 38th minute in memory of the late Dylan Tombides, who died aged 20 in 2014 after being diagnosed with testicular cancer three years earlier.
Fabianski kept out Manor Solomon and Yves Bissouma with more fine saves before Dejan Kulusevski had a shot deflected over and Japhet Tanganga missed a great chance from a corner.
Vicario kept out Bowen’s curling shot at the other end before the break and Moyes sent out the same side for the second half, as Tottenham’s new Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou made a raft of changes.
Levi Laing denied Ivan Perisic a tap-in from Richarlison’s cross soon after the restart, with Ings and Mubama making way for Gianluca Scamacca and Kamarai Swyer just before the hour.
But Spurs halved the deficit through Giovani Lo Celso on 69 minutes and Destiny Udogie got them back on level terms moments later.
West Ham regrouped from that double whammy, though, and grabbed a winner on 78 minutes, as Pablo Fornals picked out Italian striker Scamacca, who kept his composure to slot past Brandon Austin.
Moyes’ men will now return home to the UK to take on National League outfit Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday (July 22), before a trip to France to face Rennes in their final pre-season friendly a week later.
