Hamilton tells off Norris after McLaren star spotted in Mercedes hospitality

Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris had a surreal moment ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, with the McLaren star seemingly taking a wrong turn into Mercedes’ hospitality area. Norris will hope to take the fight to his compatriot once the action gets underway on Sunday afternoon, having pipped him at the British Grand Prix last time out.

Many F1 fans hope to one day see Norris in a Red Bull or Mercedes garage, with his performances warranting faith from the top teams on the grid. That became clear again at Silverstone, when the 23-year-old notched an impressive P2 behind Max Verstappen.

But Norris is still firmly contracted to McLaren, which explains Hamilton’s confusion when he wandered into the Mercedes hospitality zone at the Hungaroring.

The seven-time world champion’s media session was briefly interrupted when Norris sauntered in, with Hamilton drawing laughter from those in attendance when he shouted ‘wrong team‘.

McLaren got off to a troubled start this season, but recent upgrades and an upturn in performances have sparked optimism that they could once again take the fight to the grid’s heavy hitters in Hungary. However, Norris maintains that this year’s set-up doesn’t necessarily play to his strengths.

“You have to drive it quite one way but it’s also a way that I don’t want to drive or like to drive,” the youngster told Sky Sports. “I don’t like to drive the car the way that I have to drive it now. I feel like it isn’t to my strengths at all.

“It might be announced at the end of the year, I don’t know,” he told Sky Sports. “Honestly, I just don’t have any more information for you to share this week. It’s with the lawyers, back and forth. I’ve not been a part of it the whole time.

“I’ve been removed from it from the beginning. I wanted to be able to focus on all the other things that I have going on. The team are working on it in the background. There’s no negotiation left, it’s just all the small bits.”
