Halle Berry opens up on devastating reaction to Catwoman reviews
In 2004, Halle Berry starred in Catwoman, the first solo movie about the antihero from DC Comics. The femme fatale was famously a part-time lover of Batman and has spent many years working both with him and against him. So fans of the franchise were ecstatic when it was announced Berry would be playing the movie’s lead, Patience Phillips. Unfortunately for her, the film was critically panned. The reviews were truly brutal. Roger Ebert called the movie “tired and dated” while adding that Berry spent “a lot of time on all fours, inspiring our almost unseemly gratitude for her cleavage”. And now the actress has opened up about what happened when she saw these devastating reviews roll in.
Catwoman has become one of the most notorious movies in all Hollywood. After being made on a budget of $100 million, the film only earned $82 million at the box office.
It received countless one-star reviews, endless criticism, and Berry herself even received some Golden Raspberry Awards for her acting. These gongs are renowned for celebrating the worst performances in the film industry, and in 2005 she won the Worst Actress and Worst Picture trophies.
The film’s legacy has not yet ended, either. Berry was recently referenced on Twitter by one of her fans posting a gif of her version of Catwoman.
The fan wrote: “When I first seen this when I was a child I really thought this was the best movie in the world so imagine my shock when I grew up and found out everyone hated it???” (sic)
Berry retweeted the comment while adding: “Imagine mine,” alongside a laughing emoji.
As the lead actor of the series, Berry was the face of the franchise, and has since received the brunt of the criticism over the years – such as the aforementioned Razzie awards.
The 56-year-old actor recently confessed it was “disheartening” to see the movie crash and burn so powerfully back in 2004. She even confessed she had “carried the weight” of the movie’s failure.

Berry told Jimmy Kimmel: “I wasn’t [disappointed] but it seemed like the people were.”
She added that, behind the scenes, long before cameras started rolling, she put a lot of effort into bringing her version of the antihero to life.
“I worked really hard to be a Catwoman,” she confessed. “I learned [the Brazilian martial art] Capoeira. I did the work. The disheartening part was: I didn’t direct it, I didn’t produce it, nor did I write it. I was just the actress in it. But for all these years, I have carried the weight of that film.”
She also noted: “Whatever success it had or didn’t have somehow seemed like it was all my fault. But it really wasn’t my fault. But I’ve been carrying it.”

Berry has also spoken out in the past about how difficult it was to physically act in the movie because of her elaborate costume.
She confessed: “You’re in a suit like that, and you’re doing backflips and cartwheels… things are bound to happen. I can’t tell you how many times my pants split right open.”
She added that she had various “Janet Jackson” moments, referring to the infamous moment the singer’s breast fell out of her outfit during a Superbowl halftime performance with Justin Timberlake.
In defence of the movie, costume designer Angus Strathie said: “We wanted a very reality-based wardrobe to show the progression from demure, repressed Patience to the sensual awakening of a sexy warrior goddess.”
