Hairy Biker Dave Myers makes vital diet change as he recovers from cancer
Chef Dave Myers has been on the mend since undergoing gruelling chemotherapy treatment in his fight against cancer. The 65-year-old has now returned to work with his close pal Si King and credits a new diet for helping him on his road to recovery.
On Thursday, both the Hairy Bikers attended the Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards, where they were named Personalities of the Year.
The outing is one of the first Dave has made since revealing his cancer diagnosis in May last year.
Looking happy and healthier at the event, Dave told the Mirror: “It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous.
“So I’ve been eating a lot of sauerkraut. It really works for me – sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs. I live by it. It’s a probiotic and good for the immune system and keeps you regular. I love it. It’s the healthy eating that does it.”
Fans will also be pleased to hear that the duo have begun filming a new TV series this week, which Dave said has been a “huge step back to normality”.
He continued: “I got diagnosed last March so it’s been over a year.
“It’s a work in progress and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike.”
During the most intense part of his treatment, Dave struggled with the “brutal” side effects.
They included losing his hair, difficulty walking and a loss of appetite which left him only able to manage a “can of soup”.
He said earlier this year: “I lost so much weight and then it’s a battle to get your calories in.
“At first I thought, ‘Right, this is great, I can eat all those pies I haven’t been eating for years’, except my appetite was dreadful… a can of soup was about as far as I could go.”
He also told Kaye Adams on her How To Be 60 podcast that he was undergoing intensive physiotherapy to “learn how to walk again”, adding that it was even “hard to stand”.
