Hairy Biker Dave Myers is ‘work in progress’ after braving ’30 lots’ of chemo

The BBC star and TV chef, 65, who is one-half one the Hairy Bikers duo alongside pal Si King, 56, was diagnosed with the illness in May last year.

Dave shared how it was currently a “work in progress” as doctors hope they can turn off the last bit of cancer with “radiotherapy”.

He told The Times: “I’m doing all right. It’s a work in progress. We’ve had some hard years but this one’s been… I’ve had 30 lots of chemo, spread over three weeks and then a week off. It’s going the right way.”

The TV star added that his doctors believe that can turn the last bit of his cancer “off with radiotherapy”.

Detailing what’s ahead amid his cancer journey, he went on: “So that’s five sessions every other week and then I go film in Scotland for two weeks, then go back on chemo, but that’ll be twice a month.”

Dave and Si are due to film a BBC Two travel series, Hairy Bikers Go West, which will see the duo travel from Scotland to Devon across eight episodes.

Si added it was “very difficult to verbalise” his distress over his pal’s condition.

He shared: “There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do. He’s a scrapper. He’s a fighter.

“But there were certain points that I thought, ‘Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?'”

Dave first went public with his cancer diagnosis in May 2022, with chemotherapy causing him to lose all of his hair, including his signature beard.

Sharing the further effects of the chemotherapy, the TV personality told how at times he was too ill to walk and unable to ride his motorcycle due to being unsteady, while in addition to his hair, he also lost his eyelashes.

However, Dave has told how his “hair’s better than it was before chemo” and he has begun travelling once more.

It comes after Dave credited his new sauerkraut diet for boosting his immune system after getting back to work amid his cancer battle.

In April the chef returned to This Morning, alongside TV partner Simon King for the first time since revealing his diagnosis in May 2022.

And now Dave says the fermented cabbage, a national dish in Germany, as well as other gut-friendly meals, have helped him on his road to recovery.

“It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really what food I’ve been having,” he said.
