Having healthy, luscious locks is one of life’s ultimate goals.

From supplements to expensive shampoos, people will do anything to have their hair looking its best.

Thanks to social media, we are now bombarded with tips and tricks that promise to fix all of our mane dilemmas.

Some are wacky, some are wonderful. Some work and some don’t – but that won’t stop us from trying.

And now, one of the latest beauty trends to hit the mainstream is hair oiling.

Becoming increasingly popular on TikTok, the term currently has 189.4 million views on the app.

However, what exactly is hair oiling and will it give us A-list worthy hair?

Maia Poly, a hairstylist and colour specialist at the Neil Moodie Studio, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘Hair oiling is an ancient practice of pouring oils onto the hair and scalp, and massaging it in to restore lipids, vitamins balance and moisture.

‘All this tends to get stripped away with regular shampooing.’

In terms of the frequency of oiling, Maia says it’s a treatment that should be done every few weeks for best results.

She adds: ‘Apply warm (not hot) oil directly on the scalp. Massage for few minutes and then brush through the length of your hair and leave for 20 to 30 minutes for maximum absorption.

‘After leaving oils on the hair for that period, you might need to double cleanse. This is to ensure all the residue is removed.

‘The practice of oiling is safe for every hair type. Even fine hair will benefit from it.’

Finally, what type of oil do you need to use? Well, according to Maia, it doesn’t need to be a fancy brand.

In fact, you may have something suitable in your cupboards at home already.

‘I like using castor oil on the scalp as it feeds hair follicles and improves healthy growth,’ she explains.

‘For lengths and ends, you can reach for argan oil, avocado, almond or olive oil or even use a mixture of them all.

‘These all contain great vitamins, antioxidants and moisturising abilities.

‘Always go for organic cold pressed oils where possible, and to make the experience even more enjoyable, you can add few drops of aroma oils such as rosemary, bergamot or lavender.’
