Hair expert shares three things women can do for thinning hair

Women may experience hair loss and hair thinning, for various reasons including female pattern balding, hormonal imbalance, stress, alopecia and medication.

Hair loss may be exacerbated by age; according to hair care expert Shauna Casey, female pattern balding affects around 40 percent of women by the age of 50.

As for hormonal issues, hair loss could occur after events such as PCOS, pregnancy and menopause, “which can have an extreme effect on our hair and confidence if not taken under control”.

According to Shauna, seasonal hair thinning – predominantly in summer and winter – can be down to temperature change, hormone change, diet change and lifestyle change.

As we approach the warmer months, Shauna warned that “overexposure to sun can leave the hair and scalp feeling dry and brittle leading to hair snapping and thinning”.

She added that “sunburn on the scalp can cause hair thinning”, and for those jumping in the pool or sea on their holidays, “damage from chlorine and/or salt water can contribute to hair loss” too.

So according to the expert, what can a woman do to keep her hair “healthy”, and preserve her luscious locks all year round?

Scalp treatment

Shauna’s first tip was to invest in a weekly scalp treatment: “Keep the scalp hydrated and nourished all year round using a weekly scalp treatment.” Her favourite is the BondiBoost Elixir Hair Oil, priced at £19.50 from Sephora, but other similar brands are available.

She said: “The Elixir Pre-Treatment Oil contains a proprietary blend of nutrient-rich hair-loving oils, including Caster Oil, that help support hair growth and reduce hair loss.”

Use scalp tonic

Her next tip was one to carry out every day – a daily scalp tonic, which tackles the problem straight from the root.

“Make sure to feed the hair at the roots with all the nutrients it needs to help stay healthy,” the expert advised.

Choose shampoo carefully

Lastly, Shauna told women to invest in a shampoo and conditioner with special properties that help with hair loss.

She said: “Opt for a shampoo and conditioner that contain rosemary oil. Rosemary has been around for decades and used in many herbal medicines to treat hair loss and stimulate hair growth.”

Shauna Casey, a hair expert specialising in hair concerns, works in association with BondiBoost. The BondiBoost bestselling Hair Growth range, powered by Rosemary Oil, is the secret weapon to better scalp health and healthy hair growth. The range includes their BondiBoost HairGrowth Shampoo (£22.50, Sephora) and the BondiBoost Hair Growth Conditioner (£22.50, Sephora).
