‘Had her whole life ahead of her’ Melanie Sykes in poignant post during Sabina Nessa vigil

Melanie Sykes, 51, has taken to Twitter and Instagram to share a message about Sabina Nessa’s tragic death. The broadcaster sent her condolences to the late school teacher’s family and friends, amid the vigil which was held for the teacher this evening.

She shared a picture of a candle and wrote: “I light this candle for Sabina Nessa, who had her whole life ahead of her but was tragically murdered.

“My thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to her family, friends and everyone affected.

“No woman should ever fear for her safety at any time, but yet we do.”

She signed off the message with the hashtag “#sayhername”.

Mandu Reid, Leader of the Women’s Equality Party, also said at the vigil: “We have come together because more than our fear unites us.

“Because we want to live in a world where every woman and every girl can live free from the fear and threat of violence.

“We have come together to send a message that enough is enough.”

Sabina, 28, is believed by the Metropolitan Police to have been murdered on September 17, at around 8:30pm.

Her body was found a short distance from her home.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil John, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “Our team have been working tirelessly to find the person responsible for Sabina’s murder and this has included an extensive trawl of CCTV, work which remains ongoing.

“We would ask anyone – especially those in Kidbrooke and the wider area of Lewisham and Greenwich – to take a careful look at these images to check whether you know who this man is or have seen him over recent days.

“Any information as to his identity or whereabouts could be vital for our investigation so we are asking you to share this image far and wide to ensure as many people as possible see it.”
